There are moments in life when something small feels surprisingly significant.
Losing a scrunchie was one of those moments.
Choosing Less, But Better
Through Beautiful Benevolence, I am fortunate to have access to many scrunchies.
But I don’t want to own many.
Instead, I choose to keep only a few pieces I genuinely love, use daily, and care for. This is at the heart of slow fashion: not more, but better.
So when I realised one of my scrunchies was missing, I felt it.
Not because it was expensive.
Not because I couldn’t replace it.
But because it was mine; worn, trusted and part of my everyday routine.
Why This Scrunchie Was Different
The scrunchie I lost wasn’t just any hair accessory.
It was my Pepper biodegradable scrunchie, made from natural materials:
- Liberty Tana Lawn cotton
- An organic cotton and natural rubber stretch core
- No plastic
- No synthetic fibres
Unlike most conventional hair ties, which are made from petroleum-based elastic and synthetic fabrics, this scrunchie was designed to return gently to the earth.
That thought brought me comfort.
Because if it was truly lost, it wouldn’t sit in landfill for decades. It wouldn’t shed microplastics. It wouldn’t leave a lasting trace.
It would simply disappear over time.
The Problem With Most Scrunchies
Most scrunchies and hair ties are made from plastic-based materials.
As a result, they:
- take decades (or longer) to break down
- shed microplastics into the environment
- often end up lost, discarded and forgotten
They are small items but are widely used, frequently lost and rarely considered.
And that’s exactly why they matter.
A Small Choice That Reflects Bigger Values
Choosing a biodegradable scrunchie may seem like a small decision.
But it reflects something deeper.
It says:
- I care about what my products are made from
- I care about what happens after I lose them
- I care about reducing plastic in even the smallest parts of my life
Sustainable living isn’t always about big gestures.
Often, it’s about quiet, everyday choices.
A Happy Ending
As it turns out, this story didn’t end in loss.
A few days later, I reached into the pocket of a coat I hadn’t worn in a while…
…and there it was.
My scrunchie. Safe, familiar and ready to be worn again.
Why This Story Matters
This small experience reminded me of something important:
We don’t need more things.
We need better things.
Things we value.
Things we care for.
Things that align with how we want to live.
And when those things are made from natural, biodegradable materials, they carry a little less weight, on us and on the planet.
